Stay Ahead of the Game

Research and Development can usually be seen as a dry topic, but here at GlenCo we are not just looking at what will be available in the future for use by small businesses but what is actually out there now. There are so many technological breakthroughs that have largely been ignored due to the lack of publicity, that could benefit any computer user.

As the Internet becomes the major resource for businesses to access their own networks remotely, keeping up to date with what is happening becomes even more crucial. GlenCo are looking at technology options available to companies to help them save time and money. Spend a moment and have a look at what is here now and what is to come…very soon.

Biometrics

FingrprintGlenCo have been trialling and developing the various uses of Biometrics which allows the use of your finger print as a form of I.D. to enter systems and carry out functions. The biometric scanner scans the recipients finger print and authenticates them into the system using a previously store set of data. The lends itself to entry into buildings and access to computer or other terminals.

GlenCo have been testing the various uses and how it can benefit small businesses in and around Scotland.

The Scottish Open Source Centre

GlenCo has been setting up and establishing a Scottish Open Source Centre where they have been installing and demonstrating the use of a very credible alternative to Microsoft software. The centre is all about the use of Open Source and the various packages that are there so that small business's and even larger business's don't have to pay out large sums of money to have a secure and fully functioning network. The desktop and server machines have been running a distribution of Linux and the use of Open Office for the main office tools has led to a complete and functioning network a business can use. GlenCo have also developed and delivered courses in Linux taking students to the LPI standard for the LPI 1 exam.

Mobile Technology

Mobile computingGlenCo is in the forefront of looking at and encouraging mobile computing in conjunction with remote working abilities. This would and does enable staff and business's to develop their methods of working and free up staff to work away from an office and not be tied to their desks. It also allows for the inputting of information only once and then synchronising with a database back at the office or online live.

Handheld devices that encompass telephones and diaries and internet access are now readily available and don't cost as much as business's usually think. GlenCo have been developing applications that will allow for text and e-mail messages to be sent automatically for use in places such as schools and hairdressing salons so pupils can be reported absent when they do not register and customers do not miss their appointments.

Mobile and flexible computer is they way ahead and can be done today with the technology available, GlenCo intend to be at the fore front of their development and use.

Satellite Internet Connection

Why not take the internet anywhere?Mini MOLI Van

GlenCo have been using satellite internet on their mobile learning unit MOLI for 4 years now and have been developing and using a smaller version called a Mini MOLI for almost a year now. These are small vans that have a satellite dish on the roof and the ability to send a WiFi signal into the building so that the internet can be used in the most remotest of place. This open the doors for business's to stay put and not relocate and to encourage communities to remain intact and not move away from the area so that the area remains prosperous.

Satellite could be installed by a community and paid for by a conglomerate of businesses so that the cost was spread out. This would benefit any community. GlenCo have three of the Mini MOLI vehicles that are moving throughout Scotland and carrying out demonstrations and being used by a variety of organisations to help communities and businesses. Satellite has come on a great deal since it first came to the fore and once again GlenCo are right there keeping the progress moving and promoting the benefits to clients and communities.
